The County is reaching out to residents, municipalities, businesses, schools, and organizations before preparing their new Materials Management Plan (MMP). The MMP is a requirement for all Michigan counties following changes made to Public Act 451, Part 115, which is administered by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).

The State’s goal is to reach a 45% recycling rate, with a long-term County goal of sending less waste to landfills. Currently following a “take-make-waste” model, the MMP will allow the County to seek alternative methods to repurpose materials after their initial use through repair, reuse, recycling, or composting.

The MMP will include:

  • Identification of the highest and best uses for discarded materials
  • Strategies that improve the collection and processing of discarded materials
  • Data to quantify the impact of new strategies on the recycling rate, organics recovery rate, greenhouse gas emissions, economic development, and other environmental benefits
  • Ways to strengthen the local circular economy through reuse, repair, recovery, composting, and/or recycling
  • Resources to build awareness for all stakeholders

Get Involved

During the 18-month planning process, the County will engage with local communities and stakeholders to identify goals, objectives, and action items. You are invited to participate where you can and share your impressions, perspectives, and ideas.
