Sewer Division
Responsibilities
The Sewer Division is responsible for the maintenance of approximately 300 miles of sanitary and storm sewers, manholes and catch basins throughout the city. The Sewer Division performs various tasks, such as:
Sewer Cleaning & Flooded Basement Concerns
Sewer Cleaning: This program is set-up to clean all city sanitary and storm sewers in various areas of the city on a rotating basis.
Flooded Basement Concerns: Sewer personnel are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to respond to any basement water calls. If you have a basement water issue during regular working hours, Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. please call (248) 246-3300 and DPS personnel will respond within the hour. Any time thereafter please call police non-emergency at (248) 246-3500 and they will dispatch sewer personnel to address your concern.
Maintenance & Normal Repairs
Starting in the spring, sewer personnel, in conjunction with the Engineering Division, repair catch basins, manholes and any sewer lines that have problems. This work continues as long as weather permits. During the winter, sewer personnel inspect sewer structures for repair which the Supervisor prioritizes according to urgency.
Miss Dig
The Sewer Division, in conjunction with the Electrical Division, handles all Miss Digs. This program is set-up for the staking of utility lines before any digging can occur. City personnel stake with flags and/or paint for all city sewer mains and laterals, water mains, sewer service tie-in locations and water curb shut-offs on the sidewalk and/or easement only.
If you are going to be digging for any reason please contact Miss Dig at 1-800-482-7171. Miss Dig will send a notice to all utility companies to mark utilities to avoid damage. Please allow three business days for staking. If you are digging near a flag/paint you MUST hand dig to avoid hitting the utility. Thank you.
Severe Snow Storms
The Sewer Division supports the Highway Division with equipment and force for the plowing of city streets whenever there is a severe snow storm.
