COVID-19 Update: Message from the Animal ShelterCITY FACILITIES CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: City buildings, including City Hall, Department of Public Service, Animal Shelter, M/M Senior Center, Salter Center, Royal Oak Public Library, 44th District Court and Lindell Ice Arena, are closed to the public.
Staff will be in the building daily, as always, caring for the animals. Royal Oak Animal Shelter continues to be available by appointment to reunite lost pets with their families. People with lost pets are encouraged to email the shelter directly or through PawBoost (if they’ve identified that we have their lost pet through that website). We arrange appointments to reunite families every day, whether we’re open or not. We don’t have any pending adoptions currently and are contacting potential fosters in case we need to move any of our resident animals out of the shelter quickly.
Because this is a crisis situation, we will be focusing on emergent intake situations, including animals needing immediate care due to owners’ incapacity/hospitalization, etc. Due to our limited space, and to make sure we have the ability to assist in such emergencies, we will not be taking voluntary surrenders for the foreseeable future. We are encouraging people in less-than-dire circumstances to look for friends, family, fosters, pet assistance programs, or private rescue options instead. We realize this isn’t perfect and doesn’t anticipate every issue that may arise. We will continue to stay actively engaged and work with individuals and issues on a case-by-case basis as needed.
Please practice good hygiene and physical distancing for everyone’s benefit. Until we see you again, stay safe and healthy...and brighten up our Facebook page from time to time with pics of your fur/feather/fin/scale family as we ride this out together.

In support of the Royal Oak Animal Shelter
May 17 – May 31, 2021
Let's get walking!
Join us in May for a virtual dog walk and help us raise funds to offset the cost of medical expenses at the Royal Oak Animal Shelter
Here's how it works
- Virtual walkers purchase a Virtual Dog Walk shirt “ticket” for $21.
- T-shirt "ticket" sales will be from April 1-28.
- Get your T-shirt today at Custom Ink.
- Post selfies between May 17-31 in your T-shirt, pictures of your pet(s) while on walks -- you get the idea -- on Facebook using the hashtag #ILoveROMI and tagging @Royal Oak Animal Shelter.
- Prizes will be awarded to the first 12 people to post selfies with the hashtag #ILoveROMI.
All funds from the sales of the T-shirts will be used to offset the cost of medical expenses at the Royal Oak Animal Shelter.
A check for the proceeds will be paid to the Royal Oak Civic Foundation 501 c3 to be distributed to the Royal Oak Animal Shelter for its sole use.
The Royal Oak Animal Shelter is operated as a City service under management of the Royal Oak Police Department. Our goals are to reunite lost animals with their human companions, to provide a safe haven for lost animals or animals given up by their owners, and to arrange the best possible adoptions of available animals into the homes best suited to their personalities.
To report a stray dog, call ROPD non-emergency at (248) 246-3500.
Please Note: If you suspect an animal is being abused or neglected, contact the ROPD.
