Fire Prevention Bureau
The Fire Prevention Bureau ensures the highest level of fire prevention services through comprehensive inspections and code enforcement, public education, plan review and fire investigations. The goal of the Bureau is to identify and eliminate all types of hazardous conditions which pose a threat to life, the environment, and property. The Fire Prevention Bureau is under the command of the Fire Marshal and employ’s two fire inspectors to fulfill the Bureau’s mission.
Duties of the Fire Prevention Bureau
- Inspections and Code Enforcement of the city’s new and existing buildings to ensure compliance with the fire codes of the City of Royal Oak.
- Public Education provides valuable programs to the public to promote and teach fire safety to all ages through a variety of delivery methods. The Division’s programs range from teaching kindergarteners how to "Stop, Drop and Roll" to assisting senior citizens how to recognize and eliminate hazards in their home.
- Plan Review ensures compliance with all Royal Oak Fire Code requirements and applicable NFPA standards.
- The Fire Investigation Unit is responsible for determining origin and cause of fires and the investigations of both accidental and criminal fire related incidents. The Bureau’s fire investigators work closely with the Royal Oak Police Department to affect the successful investigation, arrest, prosecution, and conviction of arsonists.
Open Burning/Residential Outdoor Fires
There is no open burning allowed in the City of Royal Oak. Open burning is defined as means of burning that is not contained in a vessel designed to contain fire. Burning of yard waste, garbage or other fuels is strictly prohibited.
Residential outdoor fires are limited to natural gas, propane (LPG), and commercially available charcoal or charcoal briquettes. No fires of any kind are permitted on un-sprinkled, combustible balconies.
