Veterans Day Ceremony
Monday November | 11amHelp fight veteran suicide. Come to Royal Oak on the morning of Nov. 9 for the 3rd annual Ruck 22 March.
Here's how it works: You take a backpack or rucksack, you fill it with either 22 lbs. or 22 items to donate to needy and homeless veterans. You march 2.2 miles (untimed and at your own pace). At the end, you hear about how you can personally help fight the tragedy of veteran suicide.
Why? On average, 22 veterans and soldiers commit suicide every single day, a rate far higher than the national average. Together we can raise awareness of this problem and learn techniques to help those in need and spot the warning signs.
It's $22 to sign up and you get a shirt, dog tags, and bracelet, and there are food and drink at the end for participants. The proceeds go to the Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial and the donated items go directly to needy and homeless vets. It's fun, you're helping a worthy cause, and your participation really does make a difference.

Free Community Naloxone Training

Do I Have a Lead Water Service Line? ??
This past week in response to a water advisory, more than 900 of you have performed a simple test to find out what material your water service line is made of and reported it to the Department of Public Services (DPS).
DPS estimates that approximately 6 percent of water customers in Royal Oak have lead water service lines. Taking the simple test helps the city develop its inventory and lead water service line replacement plan. Find out if you have a lead water service line and report it! Leaf Pick Up - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know! The City Needs Your Help For A Smooth Leaf CollectionThe large number of trees in Royal Oak make the fall leaf collection a major task; to make it happen the City uses 13 dump trucks, two sweepers and a front-end loader with an attached clam bucket. Crews work long hours to cover the 212 miles of streets twice during the 6 week pick-up season.
The City has to wait until late October to begin the process to make sure most of the leaves are down, unfortunately Mother Nature doesn't cooperate some years. Also, the City starts at a different end of the City each year as a matter of fairness.No Street ParkingRoyal Oak will post signs in neighborhood streets, just off of major thoroughfares, notifying residents that leaf pick-up will be in the neighborhood the following day. The signs ask residents to park cars off the street because cars in the street can slow down the trucks and make it impossible to pick-up leaves in front of the residence where the car is parked.
"It's important to be considerate of your neighbors," said Greg Rassel, Director of Public Service. "A parked car left out front doesn't just affect one house, the trucks have to go around and sometimes they also can't pick-up neighbors' leaves." Temporary no-parking signs (limit 2) are available at the Department of Public Service (DPS), 1600 North Campbell Road (located on the East side of Campbell, just South of 12 Mile Rd) M - F 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The signs are not enforceable but may help remind people to park off the street. WhenSchedules are available at the Department of Public Service, cable channel 17 on Comcast or channel 10 on WOW, the Insight magazine and on the City’s website. Please Help - Only Put Leaves Out!!Just as important as keeping cars off the streets on leaf pick-up days is removing sticks, rocks, pieces of wood and other hard objects from leaf piles because they can damage propellers in the leaf vacuums which could cause downtime thus delaying leaf pick-up. |

On-Street and Surface Lot Handicap Parking Free Through February Throughout Downtown Royal OakParking for disabled persons is now free in many areas in Downtown Royal Oak through February 2020.
The free parking is being offered at nearly two dozen recently added on-street handicap spots and all surface lots. (Normal parking rates apply at all city-owned parking structures.)
The locations of the on-street handicap parking spaces -- located on Washington Ave, Center St. and Seventh St. -- were selected to minimize the distance to the nearest ramp or dropped curb, and to provide a safe aisle adjacent to the parking space.
It should be noted that the new handicap spots are not necessarily ADA compliant as the roadway pavement may exceed 2 percent in some areas. However, for a retrofit of existing parking areas, the selected locations are appropriate. 30-Minute Parking on Main StreetFor quick stops downtown, Royal Oak implemented a pilot program for 30-minute parking spaces, to allow for faster, more convenient short-term parking, including food delivery, in the downtown area in December 2018. The program includes five designated parking spaces with 30-minute meters along Main Street between 11 Mile Road and Fourth Street, located near Diamonds Steak and Seafood, Bruegger’s Bagels, Starbucks, FedEx Office Print & Ship Center and Verizon Wireless.
The 30-minute meters have designated signage and take coins or credit card payment via ParkMobile. The cost is 50 cents for 30 minutes.

Residential Lock Boxes Available at the Fire DepartmentWhen a person living alone calls 911 and is unable to open the door, firefighters must break through a door or a window causing costly damage to the person's home and wasting valuable time.
The Royal Oak Fire Department’s residential lockbox program is designed to get quick access to adults living in their own homes during medical emergencies -- especially senior citizens.
When you suffer a fall, stroke or heart attack, every second counts. The lockbox -- which contains a key to your home -- reduces the likelihood of property damage caused by first responders forcing entry into your home in response to an emergency call. The lockbox program is open to all Royal Oak residents who either live alone or are left alone on a regular basis and have a condition which may result in the need for immediate assistance due to being incapacitated or unconscious.
