Park & Read 2012

Print

park_and_readThe program will resume April 1, 2013.

Royal Oak Library cardholders will be able to check out a day pass to any of the 98 state parks from April 1 through October 1, 2012. The Department of Natural Resources and Environment and The Library of Michigan are offering Park and Read for a fourth year.

Park & Read allows library card-holders the ability to "check-out" a one-day pass into any Michigan state park or recreation area in lieu of the resident daily motor vehicle permit. This $6 savings also provides free access to the more than 500 events taking place in state parks throughout the summer.

For those interested in bringing along a library book for serious beach reading, 71 of the state parks have hammocks available for Park & Read users to borrow while on-site for the day so they can fully enjoy a great book in Michigan's great outdoors.

"This is a great opportunity to try something different. Whether you're looking for time alone or time together, these free passes are a great excuse to go for a picnic, take the kids swimming, or to find your next best fishing spot," said Ron Olson, Recreation Division chief for the DNRE.

Passes are valid for seven days from check-out and can be used for one day at any one of Michigan's 98 state parks. Passes are valid for day-use only.

Royal Oak sadly does not have a decent downtown park. Right in front of our library is a walkway with a few benches, the butterfly garden, and the city's only working water attraction facing one lone bench donated in the memory of the late Mr.Hurlbut founder of our city's renowned "nutrifoods" downtown. We really need more benches around the fountain and along the Main street entrance to attract us to sit down and read a book, a newspaper, play a musical instrument. A couple of chess and checker tables and a children's swing would be nice. If you have the time please attend and inform the library board, the park's commission, the city commission and state your wish to improve our neglected mini park including the memorial and the Stardream Fountain visable from Main and Troy. I wish the DDA would step foward once again, its been years.

The Library is still awaiting the park passes and will have them out for the public as soon as they are available. To acquire a pass from Royal Oak Public Library, an ROPL card is required. There are more than 400 participating libraries, though.
