Hear Ford Mustang Author on Eve of Dream Cruise
Wednesday, August 13
07:00 PM - 08:30 PM
Royal Oak author Michael W.R. Davis will visit the library on Wednesday, August 13 at 7:00 pm to discuss his new book, Mustang and the Pony Car Revolution.
The book, published by Arcadia Publishing as part of its Images of America series, details the history of the “sporty” Ford Mustang from its pre- and post-war predecessors to its launch in 1964 and rollout in 1966. The book also features the pony and muscle cars from 1964-1974 and the six generations of Mustangs.
Dozens of fascinating photos in the book show the evolution of the Mustang, including its introduction at the New York World’s Fair in 1964. The book also details how the car almost didn’t come to be. It was rushed to market after Ford’s Lee Iacocca scrapped a stodgier small car.
“At its 1964 introduction, Mustang was presented mainly as a fun car with a lower price, sporty features and a great fuel economy from its six-cylinder Falcon engine,” writes Davis in the introduction. “Over the years it morphed into Ford’s right-from-the-showroom-floor muscle or high-performance machine with sticker prices today looming into the $70,000s...”
Ford will bring out its 50th-anniversary 2015 Mustang next year.
Davis, who has lived in Royal Oak for 30 years, is a veteran freelance journalist, author and historian. This is his 16th book.
