When her father dies and leaves her in charge of a farm and her younger brothers, Alexandra Bergeson accepts the challenge of the unyielding land and all that comes with it. Cather’s classic is a telling portrait of prairie life for America’s Swedish, Czech, Bohemian and French immigrants.
