Steve Lehto will discuss his book Michigan’s Columbus: The Life of Douglass Houghton, a biography of the state’s first geologist from 1837 until his death at age 36 in 1845. Houghton’s 1841 annual report detailed the rich copper deposits found in the Keweenaw Peninsula. By suggesting those deposits could be mined successfully and profitably, Houghton helped foster Michigan’s subsequent mining boom. This is Lehto’s second time on ichigan Notable Book list. He made the 2007 list for Death’s Door: The Truth Behind Michigan’s Largest Mass Murder, an account of the 1913 Christmas Eve tragedy at Italian Hall in Calumet. Steve will sign and sell copies of his book at the event. Registration preferred. Fill out the form below or call the adult reference desk at 248-246-3727.
