07:00 PM - 08:30 PM
Friends Auditorium
Every year, for the past 600 years, during a ten-day period, the relic of the great Lord Buddha is venerated with a series of great processions. Each evening hundreds of drummers, dancers, torchbearers and elephants walk through the streets of the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka in a sacred procession. This historic event is known as the Kandy Esala Perahera.
Join us on Thursday, October 25 at 7:00 PM in the Friends Auditorium as American photographer Michael Sarnacki discusses his journeys and the national pageant of Kandy Esala Perahera.
In July 1995, Michael made his first trip to Sri Lanka to document this spectacle. That first journey was followed by ten more trips over the following 15 years. During these pilgrimages he photographed, researched, and wrote about this historic event and documented the lives of the people of Kandy. The result of Michael Sarnacki’s work is his beautiful book Sri Lanka and the Kandy Esala Perahera: Discovering the Spirit of Buddha in the Land of Elephants. With more than 300 compelling photographs included in his book, Michael has in essence also created a breathtaking exhibition.
