Carlton Edward "Bud" Payne Jr. age 71 Bassett Va. formerly of Berkley passed away Tuesday March 20 2012 after complications from heart surgery. He was born in Berkley February 25 1941 to Carlton E. Payne and Lydia Perry Payne who preceded him in death. Carlton served four years in the U.S. Navy where he met and married Barbara Hatcher Payne his wife of 51 years. Carlton retired in 1991 as Lt. on the Berkley Police Dept. After moving to Virginia he drove a school bus for 13 years. In addition to his parents Carlton was preceded in death by a son Rev. Carlton E. Payne III. McHenry Ill; and a sister Carol P. Peludat New Smyrna Beach Fl. Survivors include his wife Barbara; son John (Delissa) Lake Odessa Mich; daughter-in-law Megan N. Payne Bloomfield Hills Mich; five grandchildren; a sister Ernestine P. (Fred) Weiss Ft. Wayne Ind.; also a brother-in-law Jerry E. Peludat Daytona Beach Fl.; and four nieces and five nephews. His funeral was Sunday March 25 2012 at Fork Mountain United Methodist Church Bassett Va. followed by burial with military honors.
