Robert Louis Stevenson age 88 of Ocean Hills Calif. died Thursday March 8 2012. Robert was born in 1923 in Ottawa Illinois. He was the fourth child in a family that would eventually number five brothers and four sisters. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.He did his basic training at Great Lakes Ill and Machinists Mate/Optical Repair training in Washington DC. He then served in Plymouth England and aboard the USS Hector AR7 moored at Saipan in the Mariana Islands. In 1950 he graduated from Bradley University in Peoria Ill with a degree in Industrial Arts. In 1956 he received a master's degree in Education from the University of Michigan. He was an Industrial Arts teacher at Hazel Park High School in Hazel Park Mich. from 1950 to 1980; while residing in Ferndale Mich. He taught machine shop power mechanics and later on wood shop. He retired in 1980 and moved to California. At his retirement it was noted that in all those years he never had a student seriously injured. During his retirement he enjoyed playing golf wood carving traveling and repairing things for friends and family. Robert felt that he was a very lucky man. He was lucky to be born into a good family with character and values to serve and learn in the Navy to receive the GI bill to be able to go to college and teach high school to have two wonderful families and to have good health right until the end of his life. Robert is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years Marie Stevenson of Ocean Hills Calif.; his sons Lawrence Stevenson of Sequim Wash. Craig Stevenson of Vancouver Wash. (both formerly of Ferndale Mich.); stepsons Richard George and Mark step daughter Elizabeth; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sisters Phyllis and Betty and a brother Richard. Memorial services for Robert will be held on March 23 2012 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. there will be a Catholic Mass held in the Mission's main church. Followed by Methodist graveside service at 1:30-2:30 p.m. next to the church where family eulogies will be given.
