Gramzay, Joene (nee Connelly), age 85, passed on to eternal life April 21, 2015. Joene was the youngest child of Mary (Hayes) and Edward Connelly, and she was the last surviving of her siblings (Dorothy Conway, Maureen Siebert Toepel, and Ed “Bus” Connelly). Joene grew up on the east side of Detroit and graduated from St. Catharine’s High School. She married Gene Gramzay, her high school sweetheart, in 1950, and they enjoyed nearly 62 years together until Gene’s passing in late 2011. Their union produced six children, Steven (Marsi) Gramzay, Janet (Mike) Bires, Kathleen Gramzay, Rob Gramzay, Lori (Steve) Vuljaj, and the late Gerald (Toni) Gramzay. In addition to her children, Joene was blessed with and is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Brandon, McKenna and Ryan Gramzay, and Valentina, Victoria and Olivia Vuljaj, as well as several devoted nieces and nephews. Joene had a life well lived. She was very social, and she loved being with people. She had a wide circle of friends, and she had more fun than most. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, and playing cards. She loved dancing, and she and Gene were always the first couple on the dance floor and usually the last to leave. Although she never took lessons, she could play almost anything on the piano, and family get-togethers always included duets and sing-a-longs. Joene was always fashionably put together and was known for her chic sense of style. She was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage. She was also a fabulous cook and enjoyed giving dinner parties and entertaining. When her children were young, Joene insisted they try different foods and ethnic cuisines; however this sometimes backfired when all the children wanted to order some exotic dish such as lobster, escargot, or frog’s legs on the rare occasion that the entire family went out to dinner. Obviously, her love of food and cooking was instilled in her children, and one of them even became an award-winning chef. Joene forged many lasting friendships throughout her life, and she kept in touch with her remaining friends from high school right up until the end. Her warmth, openness, and sense of fun drew others to her, and she could talk to just about anyone. Joene was a wonderful woman, and she will long be remembered for her kindness and compassion. She was a great mother and a fabulous friend. We are grateful to have had her in our lives, and she will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure to have known her.
