Gerrit "Lefty" Brandt, 96, a 70-year resident of Ferndale, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, in Royal Oak. He was born April 15, 1911, in Hudsonville to Abraham and Maggie. Mr. Brandt coached both baseball and football for 40 years and was inducted into the Michigan Coaching Hall of Fame. He was very active in Ferndale and dedicated a tremendous amount of time to the community. Mr. Brandt also served in U.S. Army during World War He was predeceased by his wife, Naomi, whom he married August 13, 1942, in Wyandotte. Surviving are his son, Gary Wayne (Renee) of Grand Blanc; grandchildren, Gerrit and Jaclyn; and siblings, Marinus (Ruth) Brandt of Baur and Grace Hopp of Jenison.
