Yula Virginia (nee Martin) Hicks, 92, of Highland, formerly of Royal Oak and Bradenton, Fla., died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, in West Bloomfield. She was born Aug. 21, 1915, on a farm in Sparland, to Clifford W. and Florine Emma (White) Martin. The Martin family came to Pontiac during the Great Depression. Her father came first and got a job in the Pontiac Furniture Store. Yula and her brothers and sister attended school in a oneroom schoolhouse from grades 1 to 6. They moved from Pontiac to Birmingham. Yula had a livein job with an elderly woman, and then her parents moved to the Clawson area. She graduated from Log Cabin School. During her senior year and the summer before that she worked at Devon Gables Restaurant and through one of the girls there met Jimmy Hicks who she later married. Mrs. Hicks was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and caring homemaker. Mrs. Hicks was predeceased by her husband, James Hillis Hicks, on Aug. 6, 1997; granddaughter, Deborah Maten; and sisters and brothers, Floyd, Jim, Jack, Maxine and Ida. She is survived by her children, Beverly (Norm) Kent, Carolyn (Skip) Doyle, Helen (Roy) Geisler, Sharon Hicks, Janet Proos and Dennis Hicks; grandchildren, Norman S. (Kristen) Kent, Anita (Duane Beehler) Bargardi, Tom Maten, Allen (Leah) Maten, Bonnie Omer, Linda (Jerry) Adkins, Sheri (Sean) Snyder, Ken (Maria) Proos, Wendy (Ryan) Knape, Christin (Seth) Altman, Tanya Kurtz and Jamie (Hubert) Maddox; greatgrandchildren, Jeff, Lisa, Emily, Jennifer, Laura, Phillip, Kyle, Ryan, Alison, Lauren, Adam, Levi, Brooke, Gwen, James, (Danielle on the way), Austin, Maya, Kaitlin, Kelsey, Adam, Ashley, Andrew, Kara, Jenna, Hubert Jr. and Courtney; and brother, John (Mildred) Martin. Visitation, 29 p.m. Friday at A. J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks, Troy; funeral service, 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev.
