Join us for an evening of relaxation and reminiscing as Royal Oak’s Stu Johnson returns with Irving Berlin: Dean of American Songwriters.

Coming to America in 1893 at the age of five, Irving Berlin was in his teens singing parodies of songs of the day to earn a few extra pennies while selling papers on the street corners of New York. This ability to “write” lyrics soon made him fairly well known, leading quickly to jobs as a singing waiter, a song plugger, and the creator of some of America's greatest songs, and perhaps, the best composer of them all. Registration is requested for each program. Register below or call the Adult Reference Desk at (248) 246-3727 to sign up for this free program.

Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Eric Larson. 2013. In cinematic terms, this dramatic page-turner is Das Boot meets Titanic. Larson has a wonderful way of creating a very readable, accessible story of a time, place, and event. We get three sides of the global story–the U-boat commander, British Admiralty and President Wilson–but what really elevates this book are the affecting stories of individual crew and passengers.
