Book Buddies is a book club for ROPL’s youngest independent readers, ages 5-8 in grades K-3. Participants will get a copy of the book to keep when they sign up in person at the Youth Services Desk. Book Buddies Book Club includes activities, book discussions, and snacks based on the book. Limit 25 per session.

Curious George Discovers the Rainbow by H.A. Rey
Curious George Discovers the Rainbow is part of a new Science Storybook series by H. A. Rey. George’s city friends Betsy and Steve are taking their first trip to visit him in the country. When a light rain casts a stunning rainbow in the sky, George is introduced to all the beautiful colors of the spectrum! Come along as he chases the rainbow for his pot of gold and learns all about how rainbows occur and even how to create his own.

These 30-minute story times for ages 5 and under with their adults incorporate many enjoyable pre-reading skills including stories, rhymes, songs, finger plays, movement, and a craft. The same program is repeated on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Registration System for All Story Times: Story times are “Ticketed Drop-In” which means there is no advance registration. On the day of the program, visit the Youth Services Information Desk and pick up a numbered ticket which will be available 15 minutes before the program begins. Most story times have 24 spots available.

These 45-minute sessions are designed for preschoolers who enjoy more extended stories, movement, music and crafts. Adults stay with the children and younger siblings may attend but these sessions are developmentally appropriate for ages 3-5.

Find out about the odd and unusual variety of collections at the U of M Museum of Natural History, such as a myriad of mollusks, a sundry of sand, or an army of algae. Registered therapy dogs are here to listen to children read to them in a one-to-one setting. It is fun and helps improve reading skills because the dog listens attentively and does not judge, laugh, or criticize. Registration is required for this program. When the twelve-year-old narrator’s grandmother gives him a lawnmower, the youngster decides he might as well earn a few bucks. He meets Arnold, an investor with a cash-flow problem, who promises to buy stocks for him as payment for a freshly trimmed yard. With all the energy of a bull market, this brief farce has summer escapism written all over it.
