Everyone’s Reading 2017

7:00 pm -8:30 pm

The library will raffle free tickets for Royal Oak cardholders to attend one of two local appearances by author David Maraniss, whose Once In A Great City: a Detroit Story, is this year's community-wide read sponsored by the Metro Net Library Consortium.

Maraniss will appear Monday, May 22 at 7:00 pm at The Community House, 380 S. Bates, Birmingham, and Tuesday, May 23 at 7:00 pm at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 27375 Bell Rd., Southfield. Maraniss also will appear Tuesday, May 23 at 11:00 am at the Detroit Institute of Art, 5200 Woodward Ave., with free tickets for that event available through the DIA ticket office.

Once In A Great City traces the evolution of Detroit from a manufacturing and cultural powerhouse to a city fighting to come back. Maraniss tells the city’s story through portraits of the visionary leaders in its heyday: automobile executive Henry Ford II; labor leader Walter Reuther; Motown founder Barry Gordy Jr.; and civil rights leader the Rev. C.L. Franklin. The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist also shares vignettes that foreshadow Detroit’s darker future: The Detroit mafia’s influence on football players; Commissioner George Edward’s raid on the famed Gotham Hotel; a failed Olympic bid; and continuing deep-seated racial tensions.

Now in its sixteenth year, Everyone’s Reading promotes community dialogue through the shared experience of reading and discussing the same book. Copies of the author’s various books will be available for purchase and signing.

For more information on how Royal Oak patrons can obtain tickets for the 7:00 pm area appearances, visit ropl.org, or call the Adult Reference Desk at (248) 246-3727.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Royal Oak Public Library.
